Understanding Type of Shot Used:

Long Shot
I am using the magazine that I purchased to display a long shot used on the front of a music magazine. Long shots are primarily used for a reason as with every type of shot. A long shot would be used if the editor wanted something the reader to see the whole of the artist. In this example a long has been used to display the whole band. Sometimes it may be used to display the band's persona and mannerisms as by this cover. In other cases, like the one to the right, a long shot may be used to display what the artist is wearing. They editor here wants the American Flag to be visible on he artist.

Medium Shot
In these two examples a medium shot has been used. However they are both different types of medium shot. The cover on the left has used a regular medium shot. The medium shot shows some part of the subject in more detail, whilst still showing enough for the audience to feel as if they were looking at the whole subject. Usually they are used with intent to deliver information or to make a statement. In this case on the left a professional statement is being portrayed, to show that the artist clean cut and takes himself very seriously. The example on the right is a medium close-up and is used to display a more personal image of the artist while still showing part of the body.
Close-Up Shot
In these two examples a close-up has been used. Normally close-ups are used to display the emotion/facial expression of the artist or they are used to once again make some kind of statement. In the example on the left it's clear that the artist is making a statement. He is revealing to the reader that all of his teeth are gold. This suggests to the reader that the artist has lots of money and that he likes flashy things. The example on the right however is illustrating emotion. The artist has a stern look his face suggesting that he is a serious person and that he wants to be taken seriously by the reader and his audience.
