Chemistry Experiment

Photoshoot

The photoshoot went very well considering that not everything went to plan. Copper Sulfate isn't very visible in water and doesn't react very well. Fortunately for me I had the Potassium Permanganate which worked exceptionally well, as the colour was so rich that it made for some truly outstanding photographs. Originally I just started placing bits of the compound into the water and started photographing the results but I just kept achieving the same results. Then one of the chemistry teachers suggested that I heat the Potassium Permanganate up and photograph what it does. So I placed some of the compound into the water and then let it sink to the bottom. Once at the bottom I started to heat the water and its contents up with a candle. (only a gradual heat increase was needed for the compound to react). When heated in water small convection currents are created and the compound started to rise from the bottom and round in circles. Unfortunately, when you place the compound in the water it immediately dyes the water and it doesn't sink to the bottom properly. So to solve the issue I used a straw to place the compound at the bottom so that it wouldn't do this.

Towards the end I was eager to get use out of the Copper Sulphate so I dumped a lot of it into the beaker, but once again, there wasn't much to photograph. However the Copper Sulphate meant that the bottom half of the water went a cloudy blue colour. This gave me an idea. I grabbed a relatively large amount of of the Potassium Permanganate and dropped it in the water. While doing so I decided to shoot in burst mode to help capture the best moments.

I will place these photographs along with the best ones down below...
