Corey Holms

When searching for a photographer to study, I came across Corey Holms and his 'Food Dye' series. I wanted to discover a photographer that has or works with water so that I could develop my work further. I was fascinated when I found his work but was disappointed when I find out that there wasn't a lot of information about himself on the web. So I decided to email him to ask about his work and how he went about producing his 'Food Dye' series.
Here is his response.....
"S,
I'll keep this brief, so please let me know if you have any further questions, or if I didn't explain things clearly.
I wanted to get better at photography, and didn't have a lot of time to put towards it, so I figured the best way was to simply take a ton of photos. So I set up a project for myself, where I would take a photo a day for one year. Sounds simple, but you quickly run out of things to photograph, or at least I did. So I started becoming more creative about what to shoot, or how to set up a series of photos, or trying to learn a new technique.
And that's how the food dye series was born. I wanted to see if I could recreate some interesting things I'd seen in painting, but with food dye instead. So I set up a glass casserole dish, put water and sometimes oil/glycerin in it, and then would drip food dye into the water. The casserole dish was set on a light box, and then played in my bathroom (because I could control the light in that room), and would just shoot in the dark, with the only light being the light box under the casserole dish.
That's it, it's really quite simple. It's just that I would take hundreds of photos to get the right one. It's completely chaotic and you can't control any aspect of it, so sometimes you get something good, and other times you'll spend an hour and have absolutely nothing at all. It's just luck of the draw."
I was thrilled that he replied and let me know how he undertook his 'Food Dye' series. Now that I know what to do and how to do it, I will undertake a similar shoot myself using similar techniques.
